It Happens Every Time
"'It Happens Every Time' is the oldest song of
mine on this album. I was a little hesitant to
put such a moldy-oldy on the disc, but the guys
convinced me that the song's only old to me;
to everyone else, it's a new song."
"I wrote it during the lowest point of a serious
relationship that was slowly going south. I was
19 then, and it was like my whole world was coming
apart... of course, it was a small world then, but
it was the only world I knew."

The key to this straight-ahead, galloping tune is the shift between
the first and second half of the verses; when the stereo field widens
and the sound appears to blossom out from the more "claustrophobic"
first half of each verse.
"Well, that's exactly what I was trying to
achieve-- I wanted the sound to 'open up' at
those points, like your eyes were opening
wide and seeing things clearly at last...
like a revolation. Each time that part of
the song cycles around, we layered a little
more background vocal in there, so each pass
sounds a tiny bit richer."
"That relationship was a painful experience for
me, but I have to say it was the source for a
lotta songs. But I've promised myself this is
the last time I'll draw from that well."
