"Ten Story Love"

This Island Earth

"Somewhere along the line I was looking at a bunch of old Sci-Fi movies and thought 'These would make great song titles.' I started to work on a bunch of them around the same time, but This Island Earth was the first one I finished."
-- Brad Page

"This Island Earth" was the final song completed for the CD and, along with "Breakdown Lane", was almost an afterthought-- but turned out to be one of the favorite tracks on the disc.

"For most of my songs, I usually have to stew over them for a long period of time before I can finish them. This song wasn't like that at all, though; the words and music all came together really quickly. I whipped the basic tracks together very quickly, and kind of put Mike & Scot on the spot to come up with their parts-- which they did a great job at. Scot's 12-string part really makes the song come alive."

Theatre poster for the film

"The song doesn't have anything to do with the film, actually. It's about religion and faith. Everyone is always convinced that their way is the right way. Where is their consideration that perhaps, just *maybe* they could be wrong? That insistence, it exhausts me. You know, a little doubt can be a good thing sometimes... it keeps us humble. We need to keep a lid on our arrogance, Remind ourselves that we don't have have all the answers. Because, really, I don't think we know *anything*. The best you can hope for is to find your own way, your own personal connection. The more I watch everybody butt heads with religion, the clearer it becomes to me that none of these systems has a lock on the truth. In the end, you stand alone... you gotta find your own path. 'Don't Believe The Hype', as they say."
-- Brad Page

To put another spin on the song title, as well as the philosophical angle, Brad pulled some audio clips from the NASA archives of man's first landing on the moon.

"Something about Neil Armstrong's 'One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind' quote played against the idea of backing off on religious superiority... that makes the song work for me."
-- Brad Page
